Index-beat assessment of left ventricular systolic and diastolic function during atrial fibrillation using myocardial strain and strain ratePatients known to have normal LV function in SR and who, during an episode of paroxysmal/persistent AF or AFL, had evidence of LV dysfunction were compared with patients who did not develop reductions in LVEF during atrial tachyarrhythmias.

The clinical assessment of left ventricular (LV) systolic function during atrial fibrillation (AF) is unreliable and difficult because of beat-to-beat variability. We evaluated an index for the estimation of LV systolic function in AF that is based on the relationship between the preceding (R-R 1 ) and prepreceding (R-R 2 ) R-R intervals.
We prospectively investigated 164 patients with AF with normal left ventricular systolic function and free from heart failure who underwent first catheter ablation and pre‐/postprocedural echocardiography. Left atrial function index impairment was associated with an increased risk of developing incident atrial fibrillation and cardiovascular disease, independent of validated clinical risk prediction scores and echocardiographic measures of adverse cardiac remodeling.Impaired LV function defined by myocardial deformation was common in patients with AF and provides independent prognostic values over conventional measures with improved risk prediction. Our data highlight the need for implementing cardiac deformations in daily practice for patients with AF.This review focuses on the evaluation of LA size, LA function, and LA phasic function, and their specific role in evaluation of LVDD as well as consequent heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF).
LV Doppler stroke volume (SV), ejection fraction (EF), peak aortic flow rate (AoF) and the maximum value of the first derivative of the LV pressure curve (dP/dt (max)) were evaluated in 13 healthy open-chest dogs during triggered AF.Key points. •. Atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure (HF) frequently coexist and are associated with adverse outcomes compared with incidence of both respective conditions occurring individually. •. A comprehensive assessment of LV systolic function is essential in the investigation of the newly diagnosed AF patient. •.
